GE’s aeroderivative LM2500 gas turbine will help Manildra Group’s Shoalhaven Starches industrial process transition from coal-fired boilers to natural gas-fueled operations, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 40%.

Manildra Group operates Shoalhaven Starches, the largest wheat starch and gluten plant of its kind. Shoalhaven Starches runs 24/7/365 on electricity purchased from the national grid and steam delivered by gas and coal fired boilers. As part of Australia’s energy transition, Manildra Group needed to retire current boilers as well as become electricity self-sufficient.

Manildra Group commissioned GE Gas Power to deliver a secure supply of electricity and steam. GE technology offered a turnkey solution for the complete cogeneration plant. GE will provide Manildra Group's Shoalhaven Starches site operations with two LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbines, two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) with fresh air firing and associated Balance of Plant to electricity and steam on a continuous basis.

We recognise sustainable, stable, reliable, and affordable energy is critical to our manufacturing process…This scale of investment in energy transition, generation and infrastructure cements our commitment to a sustainable, clean energy powered site, including GE’s LM2500 turnkey power plant solutions, to support us in continuing to produce the highest quality Australian-grown and made products.

Powered by GE’s advanced turnkey power plant technology, the cogeneration plant will transition the energy supply at Manildra Group’s Shoalhaven Starches plant from existing coal-fired boilers to natural gas-fueled operations.

GE’s aeroderivative cogeneration technology will deliver up to 54 megawatts (MW) of electricity and 210 tons per hour (TPH) of steam on a continuous basis to Manildra Group’s world-class Shoalhaven Starches site operations. Installation of GE’s LM2500 gas turbines and other cogeneration hardware will help this industrial process to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40%. This transformational project will move Manildra Group toward energy self-sufficiency and support the goals of the Australian government to reduce carbon emissions.

GE’s first shipment of cogeneration equipment was received on site in Bomaderry, New South Wales, Australia in June 2022. The remaining equipment will be delivered and deployed ahead of the site’s projections that the project will be operational by early 2023.
